THE MEET
The Boise State gymnastics team, ranked No. 22 in Road to Nationals, will travel to Logan, Utah, to square off against No. 21 Utah State for a second-straight week, Saturday. The Broncos and Aggies are slated to begin their meet at 7 p.m. at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Boise State improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference with a victory over Utah State (1-5, 1-4 MRGC) this past week at ExtraMile Arena.
IN THE RANKINGS
Boise State checked in at No. 22 in this week's edition of Road to Nationals, the program's fourth-consecutive week in the top 25. The Broncos are led by their bars line-up, which ranks tied for sixth nationally (49.225). Boise State ranks tied for 25th on vault (48.825), 30th on beam (48.650) and 39th on floor (48.750).
Individually, Emily Muhlenhaupt ranks tied for second nationally on bars (9.925), and also leads the Broncos on beam (T39th; 9.850). Gabriela Cavinta leads the Broncos on vault (T103rd; 9.787), and Courtney Blackson leads the team on floor (T95th; 9.825).
STACKING TOP 25 WINS
The Broncos will be looking for a fourth victory over a top-25 opponent this week, having already knocked off No. 13 Oregon State (Jan. 15), No. 14 BYU (Jan. 23) and No. 23 Utah State in the first four meets of the year. Utah State checked in at No. 21 in this week's Road to Nationals rankings.
WEEKLY HONORS
Senior Emily Muhlenhaupt has already registered three MRGC Bars Specialist of the Week honors in 2021, while redshirt senior Maddi Nilson has a pair of MRGC Floor Specialist of the Week accolades thus far this season.
ROAD TO 10.0
Senior Emily Muhlenhaupt became the third gymnast in Boise State history to record a 9.975 on bars, Feb. 1, 2019. She did it again twice during the 2020 season, and has one such score in 2021. Additionally, she scored a 9.950 in each of her first two routines this season. If she is able to notch a 10.0, it will be the first such score on bars in school history, and just the fifth on any apparatus all-time. Most recently, Ciera Perkins registered a 10.0 on vault, Jan. 30, 2015. It was the third perfect vault in school history, a mark also achieved by Julie Wagner (March 20, 1993) and Leslie Mott (March 23, 1996). On beam, Marie Lucas registered a 10.0, Feb. 27, 2002.
CONFERENCE TITLES/REGIONALS
The Broncos captured their fifth-consecutive Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference title in 2019, but were unable to defend the championship following the cancellation of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic prior to the conclusion of the regular season. The five-straight titles were the longest by a Boise State program since the football team also won five-straight in the Western Athletic Conference from 2002-06. The only program with a longer streak in Boise State history was the wrestling team, which won seven-straight Big Sky Conference Championships from 1974-80. Boise State also made 12-consecutive NCAA Regional Championship appearances before this past season, which was canceled due to COVID-19 prior to the conclusion of the regular season.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Broncos will travel to Provo, Utah, next week, squaring off against MRGC rival BYU and Air Force, a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, in a tri-meet, Feb. 19 (Friday). The Broncos, Cougars and Falcons are set to square off at 7 p.m., at Smith Fieldhouse.
