Boise State Sweeps Utah State 3-0

2/12/2021 9:49:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

BOISE, Idaho – Lauren Ohlinger led Boise State past Utah State 3-0 tallying a team-high 13 kills Friday night in a Mountain West Conference match at Bronco Gym. Boise State rolled through the first two sets before having to rally from 24-19 down in the third to clinch the win 25-15, 25-19, 31-29. The win improves the Broncos to 3-0 on the year with a rematch versus Utah State scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday in Bronco Gym.

"I think that the team came out stronger in tonight's match than they did in either of the matches last week," said head coach Shawn Garus. "I think that shows that they had a good week of practice that they worked hard to prepare to be better. I also liked that it was a feisty battle in the third set, we had to fight from behind when Utah State picked it up a little bit. So, we had to respond. It's always nice to win in three, but I also think that if you get a little bit of adversity early in the season it can build character for your young team."

Garus on what he said to the team during the timeout trailing 24-19 in the third, "I think that we were just really trying to focus on staying aggressive, we had made a couple of cautious plays when we tipped a couple balls and pushed a couple out of system balls over the net. I think we needed to stay true to ourselves and stay aggressive via aggressive blocking and the team being offensive minded. We need to be patient when it's necessary, but we have to stay aggressive in order to beat a team that's playing well like Utah State was in the third set."

Neither team hit the ball well on the night as Boise State finished at 20.2 percent while holding Utah State to 12.4 percent, both teams had 42 kills. The Broncos' defense was key on the night tallying 14 blocks to USU's seven.

Ohlinger led Boise State in kills for the third-straight match with 13 and added one service ace, seven digs and six block assists to finish with 17 points.

"I thought there was a big difference from our games last weekend for sure we," said Ohlinger. "We really practice a lot this week on things like tight game situations. I think it really showed in the last set tonight."

Jessica Donahue was a monster at the net recording a team and season-high 11 block assists, her sixth career match with 10 or more blocks.

The Bronco backline was solid again for the blue and orange as Allison Casillas, Jordi Holdaway and Jolei Akima all served and dug the ball well on the night. Casillas collected a team-high 12 digs and had one service ace. Akima followed with 11 digs and had a team-high two service aces, while Holdaway tallied eight digs.

Danielle Boss did a good job from the setters position where she distributed a team-best 33 assists to go with four kills, six digs and six block assists.
