Broncos Down Utah State in Straight Sets
2/13/2021 6:39:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BOISE, Idaho - Jessica Donahue led Boise State to its second straight-set victory over Utah State Saturday afternoon with team-highs for kills and blocks at 10 and six, respectively. For the second-consecutive day, Boise State dominated the first two sets versus Utah State, then won a hard fought third to claim a another sweep over the Aggies.
With the victory the Broncos handed head coach Shawn Garus his 200th win as Boise State. The Blue and Orange also remained undefeated on the year at 4-0 with a pair of contests at home next week against Wyoming.
"I was a little disappointed with our play down the stretch, but I'm happy with the overall result," said head coach Shawn Garus. "I think our team will have the chance to learn from how they felt late in the third set, that can help us. I look forward to getting back in the gym and continuing to improve."
After surrendering the first point in each of the first two sets, Boise State rallied in each and never trailed again in either period as the Blue and Orange ran out to a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The third set was rough as the Broncos were forced to hold on after taking a sizable lead in the period. A Danielle Boss touch kill over the defense clinched the set 25-22 and match for the Broncos.
Donahue hit a team-high 47.1 percent for 10 kills on 17 attempts, adding seven digs and six blocks, one solo for a team-best 13.5 points.
Lauren Ohlinger and Kayly Pau each tallied nine kills, with Ohlinger adding one assist, four digs and four blocks for 11 points. Pau hit 33.3 percent with one dig and one block assist.
Boss distributed a team-best 30 assists while recording four kills, one service ace, two digs and two block assists.
"I think Danny did a good job at moving the ball around today, but I think our offense is nowhere near as good as where it's going to be in the next couple of weeks," said Garus. "I just think Dani providing leadership that's much needed on the court in those tough times is what really stood out to me."
Jolei Akima led the back line with a team-high 15 digs, while Allison Casillas contributed 11.
