Ohlinger Leads Boise State as Broncos Roll Past Wyoming

2/19/2021 5:49:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Lauren Ohlinger hit a season-high .429 and had a double-double to lead Broncos to the big MW victory.

BOISE, Idaho - Lauren Ohlinger led a dominating Boise State offense with a double-double on 18 kills and 13 digs — both team highs — as the Broncos rolled to a big 3-0 victory over Wyoming in the battle for first place in the Mountain West Conference.

The win improved Boise State to 5-0 while Wyoming moved to 4-1. The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. in Bronco Gym in the second big conference match between the two programs this weekend.

"It was great to get a 3-0 win today," said head coach Shawn Garus. "The team worked hard in practice all week and the things that they were doing well in practice, carried over to the game. You know both teams are really physical, they block and hit well, and have some big hitters. I think the key today was being able to move the ball around and pick on certain players. Once we got our passing going by the middle of the first set our offense was pretty tough to stop. I really like what we're doing."

Boise State opened the match dominating the first set behind a 13-1 run to break open a 9-9 score to set the tone, then used that momentum to claim the final two sets for a 25-12, 25-18, 25-14 win.

Ohlinger hit 42.9 percent for a season-high 18 kills to go with the 13 digs to record her second double-double of the season.

"I thought Lauren Olinger played awesome for us," said Garus. "She had not been lighting up the stat sheet offensively in the previous matches, but today she really did it all for us."

Kayly Pau was the only other Bronco in double-figure kills finishing with 10, that was the fourth match that the freshman tallied double figure kills. She also had a career-best six blocks.

Alyssa Wissinger hit 70 percent with seven kills on 10 attacks with no errors. Wissinger added a team-high seven blocks.

Danielle Boss led the team from the setter position as she distributed 33 assists as the team hit a season-high 37.3 percent in the contests. Boss also recorded four kills, nine digs and three blocks.

Boise State dominated the net tallying 11 team blocks to go with 47 kills. Wyoming was held to a season-low 11.2 percent hitting for 31 kills on 30 assists to go with three blocks. The Cowgirls entered the contest leading the MW and ranked seventh nationally for opponent's hitting percentage holding teams to 7.7 percent, the Broncos hit .373 today.
