Broncos Rally to Sweep Rebels

2/14/2021 12:47:00 AM | Men's Basketball

BOISE, Idaho - Devonaire Doutrive scored the go-ahead layup with 1:08 left and made a defensive stand in the final five seconds to lift Boise State to a 61-59 victory Saturday, over UNLV at ExtraMile Arena. The Broncos trailed by five with less than six minutes remaining but made 11-of-14 free throws down the stretch and got enough stops to secure the sweep of the Rebels and give Leon Rice his school-record 214th win as Boise State's head coach.

The Broncos (16-4, 12-3 MW) trailed by one at halftime, but used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to take a one-point lead. UNLV (8-11, 5-7 MW) responded with a 14-0 run of their own and claimed its largest lead of the game at 49-43 with 6:15 to go.

Derrick Alston, Jr. scored the next seven points for Boise State to get the Broncos back in the game. Alston finished the night with 27, matching his season high. He made 6-of-8 three-pointers, matching his career high for made triples.

Malden Armus grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a putback with 1:43 to go, tying the game at 55. UNLV made one free throw on its next trip down the floor, setting up Doutrive's go-ahead bucket. He caught a pass in the corner, drove middle, came to a jump stop and reverse pivoted into a left-handed baby hook from six feet that found the bottom of the net.

Armus rebounded a UNLV miss on the other end and was immediately fouled. He made both free throws to push the Bronco lead to three. Armus finished with eight points and 13 rebounds.

After more free throws, David Jenkins made a three-pointer with 11.4 seconds left to get UNLV back within one. Boise State committed a turnover on the ensuing inbound pass and the Rebels got a look at a go-ahead basket. Instead, Doutrive got the stop and the rebound before splitting his trip at the free throw line with two-tenths of a second remaining to provide the final margin.

Rice's 214th career victory came in his 346th game leading the Broncos. He passed Bobby Dye for the most all-time wins on the same night he tied Dye for the most games coached at Boise State.

The Broncos held their opponent under 60 points for the ninth time in 20 games this season.
