BOISE, Idaho - A 9-2 run over 67 seconds late in the game helped Boise State surge to a 79-70 win over Utah State Wednesday, and leapfrog the Aggies into first place in the Mountain West standings. Derrick Alston, Jr. scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half to keep the game close, before the Broncos' depth shined through during the second half rally.
Boise State (17-4, 13-3 MW) trailed 54-51 with 11:35 left to play when Max Rice scored six points in less than a minute, bookending an Abu Kigab three-pointer, as the Broncos took a four-point lead.
The spurt brought the crowd of 679 to its feet, in the first game fans were allowed to attend games at ExtraMile Arena this season.
Utah State (14-6, 11-3 MW) and Neemias Queta responded. Queta scored 10 of the Aggies' last 12 points to finish with 32, but it was not enough to keep pace with the Broncos.
After Queta brought Utah State within one with 7:27 to go, Marcus Shaver, Jr. scored eight straight points for the Broncos, including a contested three-pointer and a hard-earned three-point play on back-to-back possessions to push Boise State's advantage to seven. Queta scored again, but Emmanuel Akot picked up a three-point play of his own and Boise State went ahead 74-66 with 3:26 left. Utah State drew no closer than six the rest of the way.
Alston netted his 12th 20-point game of the season, while Shaver joined him in double figures with 12. Mladen Armus, RayJ Dennis, Abu Kigab and Max Rice each chipped in eight points.
Lukas Milner matched his career high with six points off the bench and contributed to multiple big stops on the defensive end down the stretch. Milner's layup with 1:39 left extended Boise State's lead to eight and all but iced the game away.
Boise State and Utah State will meet again Friday, at 8 p.m. MT on FS1.
