Boise State Falls Twice at Cal State Fullerton

2/27/2021 6:22:00 PM | Softball

Broncos come up short in two close games 2-0 and 3-2 to the Titans.

FULLERTON, Calif. - Boise State softball dropped a pair of tight games in a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday losing the first 2-0 and the second 3-2. The Broncos had chances to pull both out but could not get over the top as they fell to 3-6 on the year.

Taylor Caudill pitched a complete game in the opener, while Sara Johnson pitched five innings in the second. Offensively, India Kelly collected two hits on the day while six others had one each.

Boise State and Cal State Fullerton will close out the three-game series Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. (MT) in Fullerton.

GAME 1 RECAP
The opening contest of the doubleheader was a pitchers duel as both went the distance while the offenses struggled to get much going. Boise State freshman pitcher Taylor Caudill went the complete game, but unfortunately, the Broncos came up on the short end of the score. Caudill tallied three strikeouts, issued no walks but allowed five hits and two runs.

CS Fullerton took control of the scoreboard early with runs in the second and third innings. After giving up four hits in the first three innings, Caudill surrendered only one the rest of the way, in the fifth.

Offensively for Boise State, the batters tallied three hits in the game, a double by India Kelly in the first, a single by Alison Seng in the second and a single by Ashlyn Adams in the seventh. In all, the Broncos left five runners on base while the Titans left three.

GAME 2 RECAP
The second game saw more offense for both sides as the Titans went out to a 3-0 lead over the Broncos by the end of the fourth inning. Boise State attempted to rally down the stretch with two runs in the fifth inning. The Broncos also left one on base in the six inning and two in the seventh.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fifth, the Broncos cut their deficit to one with two runs in the period. The first came from Jordyn Hutchins when she scored from second on an Ashlyn Whalen double to left center. Jalen Ervin scored the final run when Autumn Bennett grounded out to first base, allowing Ervin to cross the plate.

The Blue and Orange finished the game with five hits as Kelly singled in the first; Kelsey Lalor singled up the middle in the fourth; while Bella Rocco singled to right and Whalen's double in the fifth; followed by a Karlee Johnson single in the seventh. CS Fullerton had seven hits and left three on base compared to Boise State's five.

Sara Johnson pitched five innings with three strikeouts, no walks, allowed six hits and three runs.
