Wolf Pack Wins Nail-Biter

RENO, Nev. - RayJ Dennis' long three-pointer rolled around the rim before curling out as the buzzer sounded on a 74-72 Nevada win, Friday at Lawlor Events Center. The game featured eight ties, seven lead changes and never a lead larger than six points by either team.

As the clock ticked under a minute, the score was knotted at 70. Grant Sherfield drove and hit a pull-up jumper to give Nevada (13-7, 8-5 MW) its first lead of the second half. Dennis countered on the other end, driving to the left block and banking in a shot to tie it back up with just over 30 seconds to play.

Sherfield, working against Dennis, was the last to score. He dribbled out the clock, maneuvered into the lane and knocked down a turnaround jumper with 2.9 seconds to play.

The Broncos (14-3, 10-2 MW) called timeout to draw up its last look. Marcus Shaver, Jr. took the inbound pass and raced up the floor, finding Dennis along the right wing. The sophomore stepped into a 30-footer and drew every ounce of iron, but not the net.

Emmanuel Akot scored a career-high 19 points, including four three-pointers. Akot's triple with 2:42 left pushed the Broncos ahead 70-67. Nevada answered on the next possession with a Desmond Cambridge three-pointer, setting the stage for the back-and-forth between Dennis and Sherfield.

Derrick Alston, Jr. led the Broncos with 23 points, while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists. Alston was 5-for-7 from three-point range. It is his ninth 20-point game of the season. Entering Friday, only 19 players in the country had nine 20-point games this season.

Cambridge (21) and Sherfield (20) each eclipsed the 20-point plateau, the 10th such game this season for Sherfield, who also tallied 14 of Nevada's 22 assists.

The two teams square off again Sunday, at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT on FS1.
