Boise State had four pairs win their pools and the other two split on the opening day in Salem, Ore.
SALEM, Ore. - Boise State's beach volleyball team was impressive on the opening day of the Corban Pairs Tournament Saturday in Salem, Ore., with four Bronco pairs winning their pool, while the other placed second. The tournament featured pairs from the host school Corban University, the University of Portland, the University of Washington and the Broncos. Boise State went 2-2 in head-to-head matches versus the Washington Huskies.
The pairs will advance out of today's pool play based on their results into tomorrow's final three brackets. The Broncos should be heavily featured in the top two brackets (gold and silver) on Sunday.
"I thought the teams did well, especially when it's a pairs tournament and it started so early in the morning. They all came out strong and at a high level. I'm excited to see how we do tomorrow during bracket play," said head coach Allison Voigt. "I think Evi (Wilson) and Erin (Martin) played at a high level, they are finding their groove since the first weekend of the season, it was good to see them play so well.Â
Sedona (Hansen) and Joey (Benson) had great matches against their opponents from Washington and Corban, just getting off to a good start and on the winning side for them is great to see. Also Katie (Martin) and Sierra (Land), and Ellie (McDonald) and Kylee (Johnson) did a great job winning their pools as well. Overall, I was really happy with how today went."
Boise State's Erin Martin and Evi Wilson swept their two matches in pool B on Saturday including a two-set victory over Washington's Ashley Shook and Kyra Peterson 21-12, 21-4. They also blew out Portland's Sophie Lee and Kendall Nolan  21-11, 21-7.Â
In pool D, the Broncos' duo of Joey Benson and Sedona Hansen went undefeated to win the group with a straight-set win over Corban's Melanie Miller and Lauren Condon (Corban). They followed that with a tough three-set victory over Washington's Avie Niece and Callie Weber (Wash.) 14-21, 21-19, 15-10.
Pool E also went to a pair from Boise State. Kylee Johnson and Ellie McDonald were perfect on the day claiming two straight-set victories over opponents from Portland and Corban.Â
The fourth pool champion was in group F where Sierra Land and Katie Martin swept through their opponents from Corban in straight sets.Â
The two pairs that split their matches to take second in their pools were the freshmen tandem of Rori Chartier and Kaylee Mejia who played in pool A, as well as Maya Watkins and Yasmin Tan in pool G. Both pairs recorded wins over teams from Corban and lost to duos from Washington.Â
