Busy Week for Broncos in California

BOISE STATE HEADS TO CALIFORNIA FOR FIVE

WHAT IS HAPPENING: The Broncos are headed to southern California for three matches versus No. 18 Long Beach State, Utah and CSUN (Cal State Northridge) Friday and Saturday, before heading north to the central coast and San Luis Obispo where they will face No. 15 Arizona and No. 5 Cal Poly on Sunday. 
THE SCHEDULE: Boise State will open at 11 a.m. (Mountain) on Friday at No. 18 Long Beach State who enters the weekend at 2-6 overall, that will be followed by a match versus the PAC-12's Utah Utes (1-5) at 1 p.m. (MT) at Long Beach. On Saturday the Broncos travel north a little to Northridge, Calif., where they will face the CSUN Matadors at 12 p.m. (MT). The weekend concludes with a big slate on Sunday when the Blue and Orange travels to San Luis Obispo to face two nationally ranked opponents in No. 15 Arizona (6-0) and No. 5 Cal Poly (6-3) at 9 a.m. (MT) and 11 a.m. (MT), respectively. 
BOISE STATE VERSUS THE FIELD: The Broncos are a combined 2-9 all-time versus the five teams they will face this weekend. They have never played Long Beach State, they are 1-0 versus Utah, 0-1 against CSUN, 1-2 versus Cal Poly and 0-6 in meetings with Arizona, including a 5-0 loss two weeks ago in Tucson. In all, Boise State will face Arizona three times this season and Utah twice, both will travel to Boise the weekend of April 16-17.

LAST WEEKEND

WHAT HAPPENED: Boise State traveled to Salem, Ore., last weekend where it competed in the Corban University Pairs Tournament. The Broncos advanced five of its six pairs to the tournament semifinals in two brackets with three reaching the finals of their respective flights.
BRONCO LEADERS: The pair of Kylee Johnson and Ellie McDonald defeated Boise State teammates in three sets for the Silver bracket title, while Evi Wilson and Erin Martin fell in the championship match of the Gold flight to a team from Washington. 
RESULTS: Overall, Boise State pairs went a combined 19-8 at the competition, three of the defeats came at the hands of Bronco teammates.

OPENING WEEKEND AT CACTUS CLASSIC

WHAT HAPPENED: Boise State opened the season the weekend of March 6-7 at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz. The Blue and Orange went 2-2 overall including a 3-2 upset of then-20th-ranked Arizona State. The Broncos also defeated Stephen F. Austin (4-1), while the losses came to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-0) and No. 15 Arizona (5-0). 
HIGHLIGHTS: Not only did the Broncos defeat ASU, Boise State had three of its pairs take Arizona's teams to three sets before falling. 
BRONCO LEADERS: The pairs of McDonald and Johnson, Katie Martin and Sierra Land, as well as Kaylee Mejia and Rorianna Chartier all went 2-2 on the weekend.

STRONG SCHEDULE

  • The Broncos have another tough schedule in 2021 featuring five teams that are currently ranked in the AVCA Top-20 and two others that are receiving votes. In all, of Boise State's 18 matches on the schedule, 11 of them are against either a team ranked in the top 20 or receiving votes.
  • This week the following Bronco opponents are either ranked or receiving votes: No. 6 Cal Poly (March 21), No. 11(tied) TCU (April 10), No. 15 Arizona (March 7 and 21, April 16), No. 17 Long Beach State (March 19), No. 20 Arizona State (March 6, April 16 and 17), RV Houston Baptist (April 9) and Tulane (April 10).
  • Eight contests will be against the Pacific-12 Conference. In addition to facing Arizona and Arizona State three times each, Boise State will also face Utah twice on March 19 and April 17.

COACHING STAFF

  • Allison Voigt returns for her third season as the head coach after serving the previous two as the assistant. In her first campaign at the helm of the Broncos, Boise State recorded its best season in program history at 13-6 with notable wins over Oregon, Nebraska and Utah. Her current record stands at 16-11 overall and 2-2 in 2021.
  • Voigt is joined by Alex Venardos who is in his second season as her assistant coach. He is a Boise State alumnus who spent his undergraduate career assisting with both the indoor and beach teams.
