Boise State Rallies to Beat Montana State 6-1

The Boise State women's tennis team overcame a slow start in doubles to defeat Montana State 6-1 on Saturday at Appleton Tennis Center

BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State women's tennis team was able to overcome a slow start Saturday morning to rally back and win 6-1 over Montana State at the Appleton Tennis Center.

Having won the doubles point in six of their last seven matches, the Broncos were accustomed to coming out of the gates quickly. This was not the case Saturday, however, as the Bobcats stunned the Blue and Orange by winning two of three doubles matches to take the quick 1-0 lead. This would be as far as the Bobcats would get, however, as the Broncos were up to the challenge in singles.

"It was an uncharacteristically slow start for us," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "We've been hot out of the gates in so many of our matches, so this was a bit of an anomaly for us. At the same time, I think we need to know how to come back like that so it was big for us to bounce back the way we did and win on all six courts in singles."

On singles court one, Joana Baptista led 6-2, 1-0 before her opponent withdrew from the match, tying the match at one apiece. Shauna Heffernan was dominant on court five, defeating Jazmin Lerman 6-0, 6-1 to give her team the 2-1 lead. Fellow freshman Pauline Ernstberger was just as dominant, finishing her match against Mirte Van Baelen 6-3, 6-1 on court two as the Broncos moved into position to clinch the match.

It was redshirt-junior Vanessa Timm who was able to clinch the win for Boise State, defeating Montana State's Enni Zander in two sets 6-4, 6-3 on court four. Holly Stewart kept the ball rolling as she ground out a three-set win on court three 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, while Ana Conde Vendrell finished off the day with a 6-7(4), 6-4, 1-0(10-4) win on court six.

The win means that the Broncos wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule with four straight victories. "I think we can credit this run to everything we've been doing since the team came back in August," said Roghaar. "Together as a whole we have just developed an incredible amount, and I think in matches and situations like these that we're finding ourselves in we're relying on what we know and what we've build over the course of the year."

Boise State now transitions into Mountain West play. Up next, the Blue and Orange will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to take on Air Force (March 27) and New Mexico (March 28).
