SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Junior Max Charles fired a 5-under 67 to earn a come-from-behind victory at the UCSB Collegiate, Tuesday.
The effort led Boise State to its first team title of the season, and its fourth top-five finish in five tournaments this year (other was sixth place). The Broncos jumped out to the lead with an 11-under first round and played even over the final 36 holes to best Weber State by two strokes.
Charles, a transfer from Midland (Texas) Community College, captured his first-collegiate medalist honor in just his second-collegiate tournament. The Melbourne, Australia native was tied for third entering the day at 5-under after carding rounds of 69 and 70, Monday.
Following a pair of birdies on the front nine, Charles went birdie-eagle-birdie over holes 11 through 13 to move to 11-under. After a bogey on 14, he made par on his final four holes to win by two strokes.
"Hopefully, this gives us a boost of confidence going forward," Bronco head coach Dan Potter said. We did not have our best day, but Max was phenomenal and the other guys made shots down the stretch. It shows we have another guy capable of winning a tournament. That's huge because you never know what someone is going to do until he is in that position."
Hugo Townsend, ranked 29th nationally, tied for third with a 5-under (67-71-73-211). Josh Gliege tied for 13th at 1-over on the strength of a 4-under first round (68-75-74-217).
Skyler Eubank earned a top 25 with a tie for 22nd at 5-over (75-72-74-221). Brian Humphreys rounded out the Broncos' lineup with a 12-over (73-78-77-228) to finish 47th.
Tuesday marked the first time since October 2018 Boise State won a tournament with an individual medalist. Humphreys and the Broncos accomplished the feat at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif.
