The Boise State women's tennis team wrapped up its 2021 campaign on Sunday morning, beating Colorado State 4-2 in Logan, Utah.
LOGAN, Utah – Boise State's women's tennis team ended its season on a high note, winning the doubles point and three singles matches en route to defeating Colorado State 4-2 in the final contest of the 2021 campaign Sunday morning in Logan, Utah.
"Getting through Colorado State today was a tough test," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "They're a talented and experienced team that has been playing really well as of late."
The Broncos excelled in doubles play, winning courts two and three in decisive fashion to take the early 1-0 lead. Pauline Ernstberger and Holly Stewart capped off a sensational season together, winning 6-3 on court two and ending the year with a 14-3 record as the No. 2 option for Boise State. Ana Conde Vendrell and Nicole Discenza secured the doubles point for the Blue and Orange, winning 6-2 on court three to give their team the edge heading into singles.
"Getting that doubles point was key," said Roghaar. "We stayed committed to the things we needed to do to secure that point for the team."
Discenza got things going for the Broncos in singles, winning in straight-sets 6-4, 6-2 to push the Bronco advantage to 2-0. She finished her freshman campaign with a stellar record of 9-2 in singles play. Colorado State responded well, however, stealing wins on courts four and five to even the score at two apiece.
Stewart stood tall to put a stop to the Rams' run, winning in two sets on court three 7-5, 6-3 to put the Broncos a win away from taking the match. On court one, Joana Baptista bounced back after dropping the first set 7-5 to dominate 6-1, 6-0 in sets two and three to clinch the win and give the Broncos something to build upon heading into the offseason.
"Our team has developed a lot along the journey this year," said Roghaar. We are young and will have six players returning next season with three years of eligibility. We have gained so much of the valuable experience needed to accomplish the goals we have as a program."
The Broncos finish a taxing 2021 campaign with a solid 12-6 record, including a 6-4 mark in the Mountain West Conference. Boise State's six conference wins are the most since they went 8-0 in WAC play in the 2009-10 season. For fourth-year player Vanessa Timm, she gets to cap an exceptional collegiate career with a win.
"I'm so happy we could send off Vanessa with a win," said Roghaar. "She's leaving a wonderful legacy in our program. She's been a true energy-giver and has helped put the culture in a wonderful place. She's leaving Boise State better than she found it, and that's the goal for all of us."
