The Boise State women's tennis team defeated Utah State 5-1 on Friday morning in Logan, Utah.

LOGAN, Utah – The Boise State women's tennis team improved to 4-1 in Mountain West Conference play with its 4-1 win over Utah State Friday morning in Logan, Utah.

A hot start from the Blue and Orange set the tone for the match early as they won the doubles point after taking courts one and two. Shauna Heffernan and Joana Baptista handled business on court one, winning 6-2 over the Aggies' Renate Lombera and Carolina Millan. Pauline Ernstberger and Holly Stewart followed closely behind, winning their court two match 6-3 over Naya Tillitt and Zara Ryan 6-3 to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

"This was a really solid road win against a very good Utah State team," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "I thought our players did a phenomenal job of coming out and starting quickly in the doubles point and executed things at a really high level which was really important for the momentum of the match."

Singles would prove a tougher test for the Broncos, as three of their wins came in either three sets or a second-set tiebreaker. Utah State struck first as Annaliese County defeated Vanessa Timm on court four 6-3, 6-4 to even the match at one apiece. Soon after, Stewart quickly reclaimed the lead for the Broncos as she took down Lombera 6-2, 7-6(5) on court three, and Nicole Discenza applied further pressure with her 6-3, 6-4 on court six to move the Broncos into position to clinch.

It was Baptista who clinched the match for Boise State, winning her court-one contest 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Millan to secure the team's tenth victory of the season.

"When we went out and started singles it was a dog fight on every court," said Roghaar. "It was really great to see our discipline shine through in some big moments and allow us to come up with the things we needed at key moments of the matches. I'm incredibly proud of the players for all of the work they've put in to earn that discipline and earn the opportunity to play that way on the big stage and in some big moments."

Up next the Broncos will turn around to take on San Jose State tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Logan. The Spartans are currently undefeated and sit atop the Mountain West Conference with a record of 10-0 including a 3-0 mark in league play.

"We're really excited for the opportunity to come out and compete tomorrow against a really good San Jose State team," said Roghaar.
