Boise State wins game one of doubleheader 4-3, second game postponed until Sunday.
BOISE, Idaho - Bella Rocco's walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth handed Boise State the 4-3 extra inning victory over Colorado State on Saturday in Boise. It was only the second game this season that went beyond seven innings for Boise State, the Broncos have won both.
The game was the first of a scheduled doubleheader which had game two suspended because of rain. The contest will resume at 10 a.m. on Sunday prior to the start of game three of the Mountain West series.
The win improved Boise State to 19-18 overall and 10-6 in league play, while CSU dropped to 10-18 and 4-9 in conference.
"I'm really happy for Bella Rocco coming up clutch with the two home runs, including the walk off game winner!" said head coach Maggie Huffaker. "She has been wanting to come through and working so hard to be the one to do it! I'm so proud of her. Also incredibly proud of Kiele (Miller) and her seven innings pitching, as well as Hannah Bailey coming in and shutting it down for the W!"
Boise State led the Rams 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning when the Rams struck for two runs in the top half of the frame to tie the score at three all.
The Broncos failed to score in the bottom of the seventh forcing the game into extra innings. The Rams then went three and out in the top of the eighth setting up Rocco's heroics.
Rocco was all the Broncos needed. The redshirt-freshman stepped up to the plate and proceeded to send a lead-off, walk-off, solo home run over the left center fence for the win. It was her second lead-off homer of the contest and fifth home run of the year.
Colorado State opened the scoring in the second and held the lead until the fourth when Rocco sent her first homer of the game over the center field wall to tie it up.
Boise State took its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the fifth when Clarissa Moreno — pinch running — scored from third on a Rocco ground out. Ashlyn Adams advanced to third on the Rocco ground out, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1 Broncos heading into the sixth.
Four Broncos recorded hits in the game, Rocco, Alison Seng and Hailey Hayes each had two, while Adams tallied one.
Kiele Miller started the game in the circle for the Broncos and pitched seven solid innings, recording two strikeouts while issuing two walks and giving up seven hits and three runs. Hannah Bailey came into the game in the eighth where she proceeded to force the first batter into a ground out, then struck out the last two for the win.
