BOISE STATE TENURE
Maggie Huffaker is in her third year as Boise State’s head softball coach. Huffaker joined the Bronco family on July 5, 2018 as the third head coach in program history.Huffaker made an immediate impact on the momentum of the program in her first season. In 2019, she guided the Broncos to the NCAA Championship for the second time in history and the first as an at-large selection. Huffaker was one of four first-year head coaches to make the NCAA tournament and finished out the season with the highest winning percentage of any first-year head coach in the nation.
At the Gainesville Regional, Boise State earned its first NCAA tournament win in its history with a 9-1 victory over Stanford. The Broncos went 2-2 overall in Florida and reached the regional championship for the first time ever and became the 10th Mountain West team to reach a region final.
Boise State also entered the polls for the first time in program history during the 2019 campaign, and ended the year ranked 35th in the RPI — the highest end-of-season ranking in history. In addition, Huffaker’s 2019 Broncos finished the season with a 36-16 overall record, which ranked as the second-highest total number of wins ever. Boise State also won 17-straight games, which is the longest winning streak to date, while becoming the fastest Bronco team to reach the 30-win threshold in the program’s 12-year existence.
Long regarded for her work with hitters, Boise State’s offense enjoyed success in her debut season. The Broncos set program records for triples (17) and home runs (64), while also ranking in the top 20 nationally in batting average (12th; .320), scoring (10th; 6.38) and slugging percentage (10th; .525).
Five players earned All-Mountain West honors on the season, while Kora Wade, Bradie Fillmore and Rebekah Cervantes were selected to NFCA All-Pacific Region teams.
Unfortunately, Huffaker’s second campaign with the Blue and Orange in 2020 was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Broncos finished their abbreviated season at 14-11 overall and were headed into conference play when the year ended. Three student-athletes, Bradie Fillmore, Karlee Johnson and Alison Seng, received postseason All-MW honors.
