BOISE, Idaho – Former Boise State cross country/track and field star Clare O'Brien was selected as a 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year conference honoree, the Mountain West announced.

Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all three NCAA divisions.

O'Brien was one of two women selected by the MW to receive conference recognition due to her outstanding achievements during her collegiate career. Nationally, 152 conference-level honorees are nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year.

The Queensland, Australia native was named Boise State's 2020-21 Female Athlete of the Year and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She is a five-time All-American on the outdoor track and is currently working towards her master's of business administration, applying her knowledge in a meaningful way on campus and beyond.

The NCAA began recognizing the conference honoree round in 2006. Since then, O'Brien becomes the third Bronco to reach this stage in the award process, joining standout gymnast Amy Glass (Independent; 2012) and fellow cross country/track and field runner Marisa Howard (Mountain West; 2015).

Next, conference-level nominations will be forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year Selection Committee, which will choose the top 10 honorees in each of the three NCAA divisions. The NCAA will announce the Top 30 honorees in September.

If O'Brien were to make the top 30, she would become just the second Boise State student-athlete to accomplish this feat, joining former cross country/track and field All-American Abbey Elsberry (2004).

From those 30 candidates, the selection committee determines the three finalists in each division. The Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year from the nine finalists. At an award ceremony Oct. 17 in Indianapolis, the Top 30 honorees will be celebrated, and the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named.
