BOISE, Idaho – Stout defense and five double-digit scorers lifted the Boise State men's basketball team to a 71-61 victory over Washington State in the Capital City Classic, Saturday evening at Idaho Central Arena in downtown Boise.
Washington State (1-1) caught fire early and scored the game's first eight points before Boise State (1-1) got right back into it with an 11-0 run of its own, taking the lead. The Bronco defense came alive and clamped the Cougars, who made just three of their next 18 field-goal attempts which helped Boise State build a 29-22 lead entering halftime.
Boise State maintained its lead for much of the second half until the Cougars used a 9-2 stint to tie things up at 48 with just under nine to play. After an 8-0 response from the Broncos, Washington State fought back again to draw within two with just over four minutes to play before an and-one effort by Tyson Degenhart in the paint, a play which marked the beginning of a 16-7 to close out the victory for Boise State.
