COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State Football Head Coach Andy Avalos was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year and redshirt freshman quarterback Taylen Green captured MW Freshman of the Year honors, highlighting the Broncos' Mountain Division best 14 all-conference honors, the league office announced Tuesday.
A former Boise State all-conference linebacker, Avalos was named the 11th football coach in the program's history as a four-year institution in January 2021. He is the first Bronco football head coach to earn a coach of the year accolade since Chris Petersen was named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009.
In just his second year at the helm, Avalos coached Boise State to an 8-0 conference record and Mountain Division title. The Broncos rank in the top 10 nationally in pass defense (third), pass efficiency defense (fourth), total defense (seventh), third down conversion defense (eighth) and scoring defense (ninth).
Green led Boise State to a 7-1 record after taking over the starting quarterback position against San Diego State five weeks into the 2022 season. He helped the Broncos to their third perfect conference record in the last four seasons.
The Lewisville, Texas native has thrown for 200-plus yards in six of his eight starts, including a 305-yard performance against Colorado State (Oct. 29). Green has also rushed for 437 yards this season, surpassing the 100-yard rushing mark in two games (Oregon State, Sept. 3 and San Diego State, Sept. 30). He has recorded 12 touchdowns passing and eight more on the ground.
Green is the first Boise State quarterback to run for 100 or more yards in a single game since 2014, and the first in program history to have two 100-yard performances in a single season. Additionally, his 91-yard touchdown run against Utah State (Nov. 25) marked the longest run from scrimmage in program history.
Sixth-year senior offensive lineman John Ojukwu and senior safety JL Skinner were both tabbed to the All-MW First Team.
For the second-consecutive season, Ojukwu was selected to the first team, marking his third-straight all-conference award. He has made 41-consecutive starts on the offensive line, including starting all 12 games at left tackle in 2022. Beginning in 2004, with the exception of the 2020 season shortened by COVID-19, Boise State has had at least one offensive lineman named first-team all-conference.
Skinner earned his second all-conference award after receiving a second-team nod a year ago. He leads Boise State with four interceptions and his 59 tackles, including 34 solo, are second among Bronco defenders.
Skinner's four interceptions this season are tied for the second-most in the MW, and he is just one of 12 student-athletes nationally to record at least 55 tackles and four interceptions in 2022.
Boise State had a pair of second-team all-conference honorees on offense in redshirt senior offensive lineman Cade Beresford and junior running back George Holani. Defensively, a trio of Broncos was tabbed to the second team in redshirt senior defensive tackle Scott Matlock, sixth-year senior linebacker Ezekiel Noa and redshirt senior linebacker DJ Schramm.
Fifth-year cornerback Caleb Biggers, junior placekicker Jonah Dalmas, Green, freshman running back Ashton Jeanty and sixth-year senior nickelback Tyreque Jones earned honorable mention.
Next, Boise State hosts the Mountain West Championship, squaring off against West Division Champion Fresno State on The Blue, Saturday, Dec. 3. The Broncos and the Bulldogs are slated to kick at 2 p.m. MT, and the game will be nationally televised on FOX.
