Aztecs Surprise Broncos in Four

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Paige Bartsch's team-high 17 kills were not enough as the Boise State volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21) at San Diego State on Thursday night in a Mountain West match at Peterson Gym. The loss moved the Blue and Orange to 14-10 overall and 6-7 in league play, while SDSU improved to 7-17 and 5-8.

After opening the first set on a 2-0 run, the Broncos watched as San Diego State responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead for good.

The Broncos led 10-9 in the second set before SDSU surged into the lead with a 2-0 run to go up 11-10. Boise State would tie it up seven times down the stretch, including at 22-22 but could never regain the lead as they fell by two.

The Broncos used a 6-0 run to break a 15-15 tie open to seize control of the third set and eventually won it by five.  

Powered by an 8-1 run, the Aztecs move from 10-9 up to 18-10 up. Boise State attempted to rally, closing within two twice, the last at 23-21, but came up short in the end as San Diego State claimed the set and the match.

Top Broncos
  • Bartsch recorded a team-high 17 kills while hitting .257 percent to go with four digs and three block assists to end the contest with a team-best 18.5 points.
  • Lauren Ohlinger added eight kills, one service ace, four digs and nine points.
  • Kayly Pau tallied seven kills and one block assist.
  • Jet Taylor had a team-high six blocks, her most as a Bronco.
Notables
  • Ohlinger has 130 career service aces to rank eighth all-time, one short of tying for seventh.
  • Ohlinger moved into third place all-time for career kills at Boise State with the eight tonight to give her 1,299.
  • Bartsch recorded her 20th match in double-digit kills this season.
  • With the win, San Diego State tied the all-time series up at 11 wins each, and 5-5 in matches played at SDSU.
What's Next
The Broncos will wrap up the week with a trip to Fresno State for a 2 p.m. (MT) first serve in the Save Mart Center on Saturday.
