THE MEET
24th-ranked Boise State gymnastics looks to avenge a loss last week to BYU as the No. 18 Cougars visit Boise Saturday (Feb. 12). The meet is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. MT and can be streamed on BroncoSports.com.
WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY
Last week the Broncos posted a score of 196.575, nearly a two-point improvement over its meet one score (194.850). The improvement boosted Boise State in the national rankings, and they enter the meet ranked No. 24.
The Broncos and Cougars have combined to win all seven Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference championships since the league came to be in the 2015 season. Boise State won an unprecedented five-straight titles from 2015-2019. BYU ended the streak by claiming the crown in 2020 and repeated as champion in 2021.
LAST TIME OUT
In the first road trip of the season Boise State was edged by No. 18 BYU 196.700 196.525 in Provo. After the Broncos led through the first two rotations, the Cougars rallied on beam and floor to narrowly take the win in front of their home crowd.
After a disappointing showing in the season-opener, the Bronco bars team bounced back in a big way, scoring 49.350 in the first rotation against BYU. Emily Muhlenhaupt collected bars title number 18 for her career with a 9.925 on the apparatus.
Emily Lopez led the way for Boise State on vault, scoring a 9.850 to take a share of her first-career medal in the event. On floor the Broncos were again lead by freshman Elaina McGovern, who wowed the crowd with a 9.875 performance.
WEEKLY AWARDS
Emily Muhlenhaupt was named co-Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Bars Specialist of the Week for her performance last weekend. The award is the 17th specialist of the week award in her career. Muhlenhaupt is ranked fourth in the nation in bars with an average of 9.938. Sophomore Emily Lopez also appears on the bars rankings, sitting eighth with an average score of 9.912.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
The Cougars enter the meet ranked 18th by RTN. This season BYU is posting an average meet score of 196.175, the best of any school in the MRGC.
Last year's conference champions are 2-1-0 in the league, having lost to Southern Utah in the conference opener before defeating Utah State and Boise State in the next two weeks.
Much like the Broncos, the Cougars are led by their bar rotation, which ranks 13th nationally with an average score of 49.145. BYU also boasts a solid beam team, as the Cougars average 49.105 per meet on the apparatus and rank 16th in the country.
