Boise State rallies past BYU to win 4-3

Broncos collect first victory in Provo since 2014.
PROVO, Utah – Boise State freshman James Van Herzeele's three-set singles win on court five clinched the Broncos a 4-3 victory at BYU Friday afternoon. It was Boise State's first win in Provo, Utah, since the 2014 season.
The Broncos rallied from dropping the team doubles point to take the lead with two quick singles victories by Simon Arca Costas and Jan Lucca Marquardt to seize momentum. They then closed it out when Pedro Liborio won in three sets at No. 1 singles to set up Van Herzeele who brought home the clinching point.
The Cougars opened the contest by claiming the team doubles point via winning all three matches. Boise State's No. 1 doubles team of Caden Moortgat and Simon Arca Costas led the Blue and Orange in doubles battling BYU's Jack Barnett and Tennyson Whiting to a tiebreaker before getting edged out down the stretch 7-6(6).
Down one heading into singles, Boise State wasted little time bouncing back into the match taking two quick straight-set victories on courts two and four, respectively, to go ahead 2-1.
Arca Costas was the first Bronco to win in singles, dispatching the Cougars' Mateo Vereau on court two 6-4, 6-1. The win was his 62nd career victory as he moved to 10-6 overall in 2021-22.
Marquardt won a second-set tiebreaker to record the Blue and Orange's next singles victory that put the Broncos on top 2-1. The junior downed Brigham Andrus in two-sets 6-3, 7-6(5) to claim his ninth singles win of the season.
BYU then pulled even with a win at No. 3 singles.
That set up Van Herzeele's match clinching victory on court five where he defeated the Cougars' Dominik Jakovljevic in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The freshman from Thailand improved to 5-3 in singles this spring.
Next up for the Broncos is a Sunday afternoon encounter at Utah.
