Broncos record their seventh win by mercy rule beat Wolf Pack 9-1 in six innings.
The win was the seventh of the season for Boise State by the eight-run mercy rule. The victory also clinched the Blue and Orange its second-straight Mountain West Conference series; it was the ninth-straight win, and the Broncos improved to 26-5 overall and 5-0 in league play.
Eight Broncos recorded hits, five had multiple-base hits — four doubles and one home run — and seven scored in the win at Hixson Park.
Sara Johnson pitched the entire way facing 25 batters and allowing one run on three hits, three walks and six strikeouts. It was her second complete game and seventh win (7-1).
As it did in game one on Friday, Boise State wasted little time taking control of the contest with three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the game.
The Broncos opened with back-to-back singles by Kelsey Hall and Mykenzie Hanna. Kelsey Lalor followed the tandem reaching base on a fielder's choice, which scored Hall. Hanna advanced from first to third on the play, aided by a throwing error by the shortstop. Hanna crossed the plate on a Serena Huchingson sacrifice bunt, followed by Lalor, who came home on an Alison Seng single to right field.
After Nevada cut the lead to 3-1 in the second, Boise State responded in the fourth when Megan Lake — pinch-running for Bella Rocco — scored on an Autumn Bennett sacrifice fly to left field, stretching the lead back to three at 4-1.
The Blue and Orange then put the game away with a big four-run fifth inning. It started with Lalor sending the first pitch of the inning over the center-field fence for her sixth homer of the year.
Abby Bumcrot and Jordyn Hutchins followed Lalor's homer with singles. Bobbiann Pratt then doubled to center field, scoring Bumcrot. With one out, Rocco singled down the right line bringing both Hutchins and Pratt home for the final runs of the inning and Boise State up 8-1.
The contest's final score came in the top of the sixth when Hanna scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 9-1 Broncos.
Boise State held Nevada scoreless in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the eight-run rule.
The Broncos and Wolf Pack will close the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. (Mountain) in Reno.
