TUCSON, Ariz. – Boise State softball continued its torrid start with a pair of wins at the Wildcat Invitational, Friday.
The Broncos (15-2) began the day with a mercy-rule 13-0, five inning victory over North Dakota (6-12) and capped it with a 5-3 win against Iowa State (10-5), which is receiving votes in multiple Top 25 polls this week.
"We respect everybody we play, but we have to go into games believing we are going to win every game," Boise State Head Coach Justin Shults said. "Sometimes we rely on the long ball, but it was good to see us score in different ways today. Against Iowa State, Hannah Bailey did a great job keeping us in the ballgame."
In Friday's opener, the Broncos scored in every inning en route to the easy victory. Bella Rocco collected three hits and joined Alycia Flores, Serena Huchingson and Autumn Bennett with two RBI each.
Taylor Caudill (6-0) started and went three innings to earn the victory. She struck out five and walked one while limiting the Fighting Hawks (6-12) to one hit. Sara Johnson struck out four over two innings of work, walked one and did not allow a hit.
Huchingson got the scoring started with a two-run triple in the first and came home on a double by Kelsey Lalor. Rocco's RBI-single in the second made the score 4-0.
In the third, Mykenzie Hanna doubled home a run and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alison Seng. Flores knocked in two with a single and Rocco's second run-scoring single plating her for a 9-0 advantage.
Boise State added four runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Bennett, an error by North Dakota and an RBI-ground out by Bobbiann Pratt.
In the game against Iowa State, both teams scored single runs in the second and third. Seng's RBI-single and Lalor's bases loaded walk accounted for the Boise State scoring.
The Broncos grabbed a 5-2 lead with a three-run fourth inning. Flores delivered a sacrifice fly, Rocco recorded an RBI-ground out and an error allowed a third run to score.
Hannah Bailey (6-1) went the distance while allowing just four hits and striking out eight.
The Broncos take on Loyola University Chicago at 1:30 p.m. and No. 8 Arizona at 4 p.m., Saturday.
