Kelsey Lalor hits two solo homers, while Hannah Bailey recorded her 10th win in the circle to lead the Broncos past the ranked Aztecs.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Kelsey Lalor, on consecutive at bats, hit a pair of lead-off home runs in the fifth and seventh innings to lead Boise State to a 6-2 game-one victory at 24th-ranked San Diego State Friday night.
Boise State recorded six runs on 10 hits and left seven runners on base in recording the big win over the conference-leading Aztecs. San Diego State (27-12, 11-2 MW) countered with two runs on six hits and left eight on base. The victory improved the Blue and Orange to 28-8 overall and 7-3 in Mountain West Conference play, good for a second-place tie with Utah State.
Hannah Bailey notched her 10th win of the season versus two losses. She pitched 5.2 innings and faced 27 batters, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking six. Sara Johnson recorded the save — her first — pitching 1.1 innings in relief. Johnson faced four batters and did not allow a run, hit, or walk, and struck out one.
Boise State opened the game with back-to-back doubles as Eliyah Flores brought Kelsey Hall home for a quick Broncos advantage in the top of the first.
After the Aztecs tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Boise State regained the lead in the second. The Broncos had the bases loaded with two outs when Eliyah Flores was hit by a pitch, bringing Jordyn Hutchins home. Lalor followed with a single up the middle that brought Autumn Bennett across the plate to give the Blue and Orange a 3-1 advantage.
San Diego State attempted to rally one more time closing within one at 3-2 on a solo homer by Taylor Adams in the fourth, the Aztecs' last run of the contest.
Boise State wasted little time stretching its advantage in the top of the fifth when Lalor sent the first of two lead-off homers in the game over the left-center fence.
Up two heading into the sixth, the Broncos recorded back-to-back doubles for the second time in the game. The first came from Serena Huchingson to left field. She came home when Bennett sent a shot down the left line to give Boise State a 5-2 lead.
The game's final score was Lalor's second lead-off homer in the top of the seventh, her ninth of the year — tied for first on the team — and a team-high sixth during conference play.
The Broncos and Aztecs will continue the three-game conference series Saturday at 7 p.m. (Mountain) at the San Diego State Softball Stadium.
