Kelsey Lalor hit her third homer of the series and team-high 10th of the season to tie the game in the sixth.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Boise State softball lost a heartbreaker 3-2 in 13 innings at 24th-ranked San Diego State Friday night in a Mountain West Conference game. The 13 innings tied Boise State's program record for most innings played, dating back to May 12, 2011, when the Broncos beat Louisiana Tech 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament opening round.Â
With the Broncos trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth, senior Kelsey Lalor hit her third homer of the series and team-high 10th of the season to tie the score at 2-2. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the two teams battled through 13 innings before the Aztecs' Alexa Schultz came home on a single to right field by Taylor Adams to secure the win for San Diego State.
The defenses dominated the game as the two teams combined for 17 hits on 91 at-bats with 77 putouts, 30 strikeouts, six walks, and 19 runners left on base. Â
Boise State's starter in the circle was Taylor Caudill, who pitched six innings. Caudill faced 27 batters, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Sara Johnson entered the game in the seventh with a runner on first and no outs. She faced 26 batters and allowed one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk.Â
The Broncos had one hit and were down two runs heading into the sixth when Boise State rallied with two scores. Eliyah Flores started the rally when she sent a single to shortstop with two outs. The next batter was the Broncos' Lalor, who smashed her two-RBI homer over the right-center fence to tie the game at 2-2. Â
The Aztecs had bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh when the Broncos' Johnson recorded back-to-back strikeouts to go with a groundout to get out of the inning without surrendering a run. Â
Neither team managed to score through the next five innings, which included the Aztecs going down in order in the ninth, 10th, and 11th innings, while the Broncos went three up and three down in the 10th, 11th and 12th.Â
Boise State had two runners on base with two outs in the top of the 13th when Bella Rocco hit a single through the left side; Autumn Bennett — who started the play on second — was sent home where she was thrown out attempting to score the go-ahead run, ending the Broncos' 13th.Â
San Diego State then closed the game out in the bottom of the 13th with Adams' single that brought Schultz home for the winning run. Â Â
Boise State moved to 28-9 overall and 7-4 in conference play with the loss, while league-leading San Diego State improved to 28-12 and 12-2. The two will meet one more time Saturday in the final game; first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (MT). Â Â
