Boise State Wins Regular Season Finale Over San Jose State

Shah clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 5 singles.
BOISE, Idaho - Bhakti Shah's three-set victory at No. 5 singles clinched the match for Boise State as the Broncos defeated the San Jose State Spartans 4-2 in the regular-season finale at the Appleton Tennis Center on Saturday.Â
With the Broncos leading 3-2, Shah rallied from a second set loss to put away SJSU's Lara Marco Mas 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 to clinch the win for Boise State. The freshman from India finished the regular season at 15-7 overall.
Boise State Interim Head Coach Maria Lopez was happy with the Broncos' performance on Saturday, "It's a great feeling for our players to finish the regular season at home in front of our fans on a high note. Today's performance was a complete team effort, and I am proud of how this team kept looking for ways to compete and be resilient. We are looking forward to the quick turnaround for the tournament next week, and we are excited for the opportunity of what's ahead."
Boise State opened the match by claiming the doubles point 2-1 over the Spartans with wins on courts three and one, respectively. Ana Conde Vendrell and Pauline Ernstberger won their 10th match when they dispatched Jovana Babic and Raquel Villan Pereira 6-3 at the No. 3 position.Â
Joana Baptista and Nicole Discenza clinched the team point when they beat Alba Pedrero Galindo and Lara Marco Mas 6-3 on court one. It was their 10th win of the year and eighth at No. 1 doubles during the team dual season.Â
After San Jose State had tied the score at 1-1 with the first singles victory, Discenza put the Blue and Orange back in front with a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Her 15th win of the season came versus Rozalina Youseva.
Ernstberger gave Boise State a 3-1 advantage when she won in two sets on court one. After a tight set one victory, she dominated the second set to take the contest 7-5, 6-1 to earn her 15th win of the year.Â
The Spartans came back within one point at 3-2 with a win on court six, which set up Shah's matching win at No. 5 singles.Â
Boise State finished the regular season at 8-7 overall and 4-6 in Mountain West Conference play. They will head to the conference championship tournament next week in Tucson, Ariz., (April 27-May 1) as the No. 7 seed. In the first round, the Broncos will have a re-match with No. 10 seed San Jose State (6-14, 2-8 MW).
