WHAT IS HAPPENING
The Broncos (8-7, 4-6 MW) will be at the 2022 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship this week (April 27-30) at Oro Valley, Ariz. The 11-team championship starts Wednesday at the El Conquistador Resort Tennis Center and runs through Saturday. Boise State is looking for its first-ever MW Championship title since joining the league for the 2012 season. Â
WHAT'S WAITING FOR THE BRONCOS
Boise State enters the tournament as the seventh seed and will open the competition against 10th-seeded San Jose State in a rematch of last Sunday's regular-season finale in Boise, won 4-2 by the Broncos. The two teams square off against each other at 11 a.m. (Mountain) Wednesday. The Broncos bring an 8-7 overall record and 4-6 league mark to the championship, while SJSU is 5-14 and 2-8. The winner gets second-seeded Colorado State (14-7, 8-2 MW) at 3 p.m. (MT) on Thursday. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday afternoon and the championship for noon on Saturday. Â Â
THE MW CHAMPIONSHIP
This is the first MW Championship tournament since 2019; the 2020 and 2021 editions were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Boise State lost 4-3 to Utah State in the 2019 first round. The Broncos went 1-1 at the 2018 championship defeating Colorado State 4-3 in the first round before falling 4-3 to San Jose State in the quarterfinal round. The Blue and Orange have never reached the semifinals in this tournament. Â Â
ERNSTBERGER NAMED ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST IN SINGLES
Ernstberger received all-conference recognition for the second-consecutive year for her singles play. The sophomore from Bruchsal, Germany, went 15-9 in singles during the 2021-22 campaign. In team duals this spring, she faced the top player from the opposition recording a 6-6 mark at the No. 1 singles slot, including 3-4 in MW play.Â
BAPTISTA AND DISCENZA NAMED ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST IN DOUBLES
Boise State's top tandem of Baptista and Discenza was one of eight doubles teams on the all-conference team. The two recorded a 10-6 mark on the year and went 8-5 during the team dual season this spring, playing at the No. 1 position. Baptista and Discenza went 4-4 in MW action. This is Baptista's, a junior from Porto, Portugal, fourth MW postseason honor in her career, twice for singles and twice in doubles. Meanwhile, this is the first postseason honor for Discenza, a sophomore from Maracay, Venezuela.Â
STEWART LOOKING FOR 20TH WIN
Holly Stewart enters the MW Championship at 19-9 overall and is looking for her 20th singles victory. If she reaches 20 wins versus San Jose State on Wednesday, Stewart would be the third Bronco since the spring of 2015 to reach the 20-win plateau in a season; joining Lilian Poling, who went 21-12 in 2017 and 24-10 in 2019, while Wilhelmina Palmer went 22-11 in 2019. Â
LEADING THE BRONCOS
Four Broncos have recorded 15 or more victories this year, including the fall and spring seasons. Holly Stewart leads the group at 19-9, Bhakti Shah follows at 15-7, Discenza at 15-8 and Ernstberger at 15-9.
In doubles play, the top tandem is Baptista and Discenza, competing at No. 1 where they are 8-5 this spring and 10-6 on the year. Stewart and Shauna Heffernan have gone 10-3 at No. 2 doubles in team duals and are 12-4 overall.
