Broncos Take It All At Redhawk Invitational
4/5/2022 4:58:00 PM | Men's Golf
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Despite unusual circumstances, Max Charles weathered the storm to shoot a 2-under 69, taking home medalist honors and leading Boise State men's golf to a first-place finish at the 2022 Redhawk Invitational, Tuesday afternoon.
Teams were halfway through the first round, Monday, before play was suspended due to rough weather. With conditions holding firm through the afternoon, it was decided there would be one round of play Tuesday, to determine the champion.
"I'm really proud of our guys," said head coach Dan Potter. "Yesterday was a long and unusual day and they gutted it out with good attitudes. Today was another unusual day knowing it was just 18 holes to determine the outcome. We played tough. It's been hard for us in the past to keep momentum on days when birdies are hard to come by and we just kept grinding today and earned the victory. This one was unusual, but it's always fun to win."
The Broncos finished the round with a score of 3-over, 287, five strokes clear of second-place Abilene Christian. Earlier this season the Broncos claimed a dominant victory at the Mark Simpson Invitational in Boulder, Colo. This marks the second time a Boise State team has claimed two tournament championships in the same season, with the last occurrence being in the 1992-93 campaign.
Charles was even par on the front nine holes, but fired three birdies on the back nine to pull away for the victory. This is the second tournament title in Charles' career, as the Aussie won the UCSB Collegiate last season. He became the eighth Bronco all-time to win multiple tournaments in a career, joining teammate Hugo Townsend who also has two.
Two other Broncos finished inside the top 10, with Townsend and Alex Talbot each shooting 1-over to tie for seventh place. For Talbot, the finish was the highest in his career and first inside the top 10. Townsend locked in his 12th top-10 outing of his career, which currently ranks fifth all-time in Boise State history.
Skyler Eubank turned in another solid outing for the Blue and Orange, shooting a 3-over 74 to place 15th. Rounding out the lineup was Nick Hedman, who shot 9-over to finish tied for 99th.
Up next for Boise State is a trip to Tempe, Ariz., for the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Arizona State. The Tournament will take place April 15-16 at Papago Golf Club.
