Townsend Takes Runner-Up, Broncos Finish Fourth at MW Championships
5/1/2022 7:46:00 PM | Men's Golf
BREMERTON, Wash. – Hugo Townsend shot a scorching 5-under 67 to storm back in the final round of play but finished runner-up in the end as Boise State men's golf placed fourth at the Mountain West Men's Golf Championships, Sunday.
"We had some good moments this week but had far too many unforced errors to really contend," said head coach Dan Potter. "There are great teams in our league and you have to play great to win. We battled well for a decent finish but we had too many sloppy moments in the end."
Townsend (70-70-67—207) entered the final round Sunday at 4-under par, seven strokes back from the leader Connor Jones of Colorado State. After bogeying the first hole of the round, the Swede roared back to post six birdies across the next 13 holes and ended his round tied with Jones at the top. Jones sank a birdie on 17 and closed out the final hole with a par to edge Townsend by a single stroke.
"Hugo has been playing well lately," said Potter. "He didn't get much to go his way in the first two rounds but he got some momentum today and nearly pulled it off. It was fun to watch him do his thing today.
The finish was Townsend's fourth top-five finish of the year, and his 19th-straight in the top 25. His score of 207 stands as the fourth-lowest by a Bronco at a conference championship.
Skyler Eubank (69-73-73—215), secured his eighth top-25 finish of the season, shooting 1-under to tie for 17th. Max Charles (70-72-77—219) tied for 25th at 3-over, his highest finish at the MW Championships in his career.
Rounding out the lineup for Boise State was Nick Hedman (74-74-72—220) who tied for 28th at 4-over, and Alex Talbot (73-76-73—222) who came in at 33rd. The Broncos (282-289-285—865) carded an 8-under 865 as a team, 14 strokes behind winner San Diego State.
Boise State now waits to hear if it has qualified for the NCAA Regionals. The selection show is set for Wednesday, May 4 at 2 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on Golf Channel. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will be selected to compete at three regionals while the other three regionals will feature 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. Thirty teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams will then advance to the national finals.
