Sippel is the second signing of the Luke Shields era.

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Men's Tennis Head Coach Luke Shields announced today the addition of Sam Sippel for the 2022-23 campaign. Sippel is the second recruit to sign with Shields since he took over the program in May. The native of Nuernberg, Germany, is a transfer from Azusa Pacific in California who will have two years of eligibility left at Boise State.

"We are happy to announce Sam joining our team," Shields said. "Sam brings a lot of experience as a division two All-American. He is a proven winner on the court and in the classroom. Sam is tall (6-foot-5), moves well, and has a great feel for the court. He will come in right away and be an impact player."

Sippel's honors are numerous and include being named a 2021 ITA DII All-American in singles as a freshman after finishing the year ranked 14th nationally and third in the west region. He is a two-time All-PacWest honoree in singles and once in doubles. Sippel was also the 2021 PacWest Conference Freshman of the Year. During the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, he was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, ITA West Region Rookie of the Year and an ITA Fall Singles All-American. In addition, he won the 2020 ITA Fall West Region singles championship.

Sippel played primarily at No. 2 singles throughout his career and went a combined 42-6 at Azusa Pacific, 39 of those victories coming in straight sets. As a sophomore this past spring he went 18-4 and closed the season on a nine-match wins streak.

In doubles, Sippel went a combined 40-10 overall in three years, splitting time between the No. 2 and 3 positions.

This past spring, he helped the Azusa Pacific Cougars to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and a second-place finish in the PacWest.
