Beach Volleyball Joins Southland Conference

BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State beach volleyball program has accepted an invitation to join the Southland Conference beginning with the 2022-23 academic year, director of athletics Jeramiah Dickey announced Thursday.
The Southland Conference, located in Frisco, Texas, is currently comprised of Houston Baptist (Houston, Texas), New Orleans (New Orleans, La.), Nicholls (Thibodaux, La.), Southeastern Louisiana (Hammond, La.) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Corpus Christi, Texas) in beach volleyball.
This past season, the Southland Conference Tournament champion received an automatic bid to the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship.
"This is a monumental moment for our beach volleyball program," Dickey said. "Joining a conference immediately enhances the student-athlete experience, allowing our young women to compete for championships, and also expands the Boise State brand into different parts of the country. I am excited for our head coach, Allison Voigt, and our beach volleyball student-athletes, and am appreciative of the leadership of Southland Conference Commissioner Chris Grant and his forward thinking on a growing collegiate sport."

"We are thrilled to have Boise State join us as an affiliate member for Southland Conference beach volleyball beginning next spring. The addition of Boise State beach volleyball further strengthens our membership's commitment to competing for national championships and contributing to the sport's growth and longevity."
As part of the agreement, Boise State will pay an annual fee of $2,500 to help conduct the conference tournament. The 2023 Southland Conference Tournament is a double-elimination event, and will be held at The Islander Courts at Water's Edge Park in Corpus Christi, Texas, April 21-23.
Seeding for the conference tournament will be determined by a midseason, round-robin event at Third Coast Volleyball Club in Houston. There are no other regular-season travel requirements as part of the invitation to join the league.
"This is an amazing opportunity for our program," Voigt said. "Joining a conference allows for more than just competing for championships. Having competed as an independent since launching the program, our student-athletes have yet to experience the recognition and postseason accolades that come with being part of a league.
"We will be able to continue with strong, regional nonconference scheduling, but this move also allows us to extend our season. I couldn't be more excited for our team and the future of this program."
The first school in the Pacific Northwest and the 38th nationally to announce sponsorship of beach volleyball in the fall of 2013, Boise State's first season of competition was spring of 2014. Since the program's inception, the Broncos have competed as an independent, as the Mountain West does not sponsor beach volleyball.
Boise State recorded its first winning season in 2019 (13-6), Voigt's first season at the helm. This past year, the Broncos went 20-9, the first 20-win campaign in school history. Included was a 4-1 victory over No. 13 Cal Poly in Salt Lake City.
