BOISE, Idaho – David Trainor has been named the head coach of Boise State's men's golf program, director of athletics Jeramiah Dickey announced Friday.
Trainor brings with him nine seasons of head-coaching experience from Akron, where he led Zips student-athletes to one individual MAC championship, three individual NCAA regional appearances, three PING All-Region team awards, five first-team All-MAC, 15 Academic All-MAC selections and seven Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors. Over his final five seasons with the Zips, Trainor's teams posted 31 top-10 team finishes, including a title at the Firestone Invitational in fall 2018.
"Our goal throughout our process was to identify someone who is a servant leader who best exemplifies what it means to be a Bronco," Dickey said. "David Trainor distinguished himself through every step of the process. He brings a tremendous amount of experience leading young men and is committed to the success of our student-athletes on and off the course. I am extremely excited to welcome him, his wife Landon, and sons William and Cian (KEY-an) to Bronco Nation and to see What's Next for our men's golf program."
Trainor was the head coach at Akron from 2011 until the program was dissolved due to the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Trainor excels in creating a well-rounded student-athlete experience, having produced a 450% increase in national academic and athletic honors, and postseason participation while at Akron. In his nine seasons with the Zips, he helped the program raise its cumulative GPA from 3.19 to 3.56.
"Wow, I am beyond excited to be the next men's golf coach at Boise State," Trainor said. "Thank you to Jeramiah Dickey for having faith in me to lead this program and continue the great job coach Potter had done. Jeramiah's vision for Boise State Athletics is ambitious and his passion for the student-athletes is paramount."
Before taking over at Akron, Trainor was a member of the men's golf staff at Kentucky where he spent time in the roles of assistant and associate head coach. In his seven seasons at UK he helped the Wildcats to two top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championship (seventh – 2005; fifth – 2006), the 2005 Southeastern Conference championship and nine overall tournament titles.
A native of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, Trainor was a four-year letterwinner at College of Charleston where he graduated in 2000 with a bachelor in business administration.
