BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Corey Ihmels announced the promotion of assistant coach Benji Wetli to associate head coach, Tuesday.
Wetli joined the Broncos' cross country and track & field programs in August 2018, and just three months later, the men's cross country team captured its second Mountain West title in program history.
At the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Wetli helped coach the women's team to a program-best sixth-place finish, and the men's squad to a 10th-place performance.
The Bronco women garnered two additional top-20 finishes at the cross country national championships in 2019 (17th place) and 2021 (ninth), and the men secured a 21st-place finish in 2019.
During the 2021-22 season, Wetli played a pivotal role in developing distance standout Dario De Caro, who captured three individual conference titles in cross country and the outdoor 5,000m and 10,000m races.
In total, eight Boise State student-athletes and two distance medley relay teams have accounted for 11 conference titles during Wetli's time as a Bronco.
Prior to coming to the Treasure Valley, Wetli completed a four-year stint at San Francisco, including serving as the Dons' interim head cross country and track & field coach.
During his tenure at San Francisco, Wetli helped the Dons become a nationally-recognized program.
In 2016, Wetli guided the San Francisco women to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and in 2017, the Don women garnered runner-up honors at the national championships, as three student-athletes earned All-America honors.
On the men's side, the Dons captured back-to-back eighth-place finishes at the 2016 and 2017 NCAA West Region Championships. Prior to Wetli's arrival, the men's squad had never placed higher than 12th at the regional meet.
The Dons were just as successful on the track. From 2014-18, the women's program broke every record starting with the 800-meter race, while the men's team achieved six school records.
Additionally, distance runner Charlotte Taylor concluded the 2017 season winning the women's 10,000m race at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
A Decorah, Iowa native, Wetli spent the 2013-14 season at UNC-Greensboro, coaching 10 student-athletes to All-Southern Conference honors and qualifying two women to the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
Prior to his time in North Carolina, Wetli spent three seasons on the staff at Iowa State under Ihmels. During his tenure, Cyclone student-athletes won three individual national championship titles and earned 25 All-America accolades.
Wetli competed in cross country and track at St. Norbert College (Wis.) and was a 10-time academic all-conference honoree. He earned his bachelor's degree in history in 2010 and obtained a master's in kinesiology in 2013 while serving on the Iowa State coaching staff.
Wetli is a certified USA Track and Field Level 1 coach. He and his fiancé Elisabeth reside in Boise.
