Broncos Roll Past Roadrunners 5-1

9/11/2022 3:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Freshman Hayden Wilsey scored her second brace of the season as Boise State women's soccer powered past CSU Bakersfield in 5-1 fashion Sunday morning on the road.

The Roadrunners (2-5-0) opened the match with an aggressive press that had the Broncos defending in their own half for much of the first 15 minutes. Boise State (3-2-2) responded in the 19th minute as Carly Cross ripped a shot that was saved by the keeper but collected by Sophie Drown who sent it in for the lead.

The scoring continued in the 37th minute when Evva Vail played a ball through to the streaking Wilsey, who shook off a defender and beat the keeper to extend the lead. Just two minutes later Wilsey collected a ball in the penalty box and rifled it into the top corner to make it three for Boise State in the first half.

A handball against the Broncos in the 55th minute yielded a free kick to the Roadrunners who scored to reduce the deficit. Boise State reclaimed its cushion on the scoreboard when Morgan Stone slotted a ball into Cross in front of the net, and in the 81st minute Kenzie MacMillan sank a penalty kick to give the Broncos five goals on the day.

Quotable
  • "This was a team performance," said head coach Jim Thomas. "To score that many goals on the road on a Sunday is super rare but is reflective of where we're going. I'm happy with where we're at. We have a big weekend coming up and need to keep riding the momentum."
  • "I'm glad I can step on the field and show my stuff," said Wilsey. "Being coached by some of the players who have been here has been really helpful and has really helped me succeed."
