Boise State Falls 3-1 at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO – Boise State's volleyball team came up short Thursday night in San Diego as the Broncos fell in four sets 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22) to the San Diego State Aztecs. The loss moves the Blue and Orange to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in MW play, tied for second place.
 
San Diego State used a 9-0 run early in the first set to take an 11-4 lead. However, the Broncos regrouped and slowly rallied from the seven-point deficit to win the frame by four, 25-21. Paige Bartsch recorded eight kills to lead Boise State back.  
 
Boise State also opened the second frame slow, as SDSU rattled off a 6-1 run to go up 11-6. The Broncos would never overcome the lead, but they did not go down without a fight, cutting a seven-point deficit to one at 23-22 before the Aztecs held the Blue and Orange off for the 25-22 win.
 
Tied at 9-9, San Diego State used a 6-0 run to take control of the third set, eventually winning it 25-16 over the Broncos.
 
Boise State opened the fourth set strong, taking an early five-point 10-5 lead. San Diego State rallied with a 9-1 run to take a 17-13 advantage to claim the lead for good. Boise State did rally back, closing to within one late at 23-22, but could get no closer as San Diego State put it away 25-22 for the set and match victories.

Top Broncos

  • Paige Bartsch led all scorers in the match with 27.5 points on 25 kills and five block assists; she also hit .339 and had one assist and nine digs.
  • Breanna Mitchell tallied a team-high 21 digs from her libero position.
  • Annie Kaminski had eight kills and tied Bartsch for the lead in blocks with five.

Notables

  • Bartsch – ranked sixth nationally for total kills – recorded her ninth match of the season and 16th in her career with 20-plus kills…she also had her 19th contest of the year and 49th of her career with double-digit kills.
  • Bartsch's 25 kills are tied for fifth, and the 27.5 points are ranked sixth during the rally-scoring era for kills and points in a four-set match in program history.
  • Bartsch – ranked fifth nationally for total points – recorded her 12th contest this year with 20-plus points and her fifth with 25-plus.
  • Mitchell – ranked seventh in the MW for total digs – recorded her fourth match this season with 20-plus digs.
  • Kaminski's team-high (tied) five blocks marked the 11th time she has led the team in blocks this season.

What's Next

The Broncos return home to host the UNLV Rebels on Saturday afternoon; first serve is scheduled for noon (Mountain) in Bronco Gym.
