The BroncoLife summer internship program provides current student-athletes a realistic work experience in various Boise State athletic department offices to explore careers, gain a better understanding of how a corporate environment functions, including basic payroll requirements to guarantee compensation. Now in its second year, the five-week, 10 hour-per week program continues to draw interest from student-athletes with more participants and staff support.
Â
"At some point in their lives, our student-athletes will enter the workforce," said student-athlete development/BroncoLife coordinator Kelli Nooney. "The internship program is designed to provide an entry-level introduction to office culture, the opportunity to explore different career paths that may be outside their major, and connect with a mentor."
Â
The program incorporated the career development template of Boise State's Work-U program, through the college of innovation and design, which is set-up to provide all Boise State students the opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience, provide clarity on career goals, mentorship, focused classroom time, a chance to build their resume and network – all while gaining three upper-division credits. Participants are also introduced to the many resources of the university's Career Services department.
Â
"The Work-U format was perfect for our student-athletes," said Nooney. "Plus, many of our mentors were student-athletes themselves and share a unique perspective on how to transfer those skills developed on the playing field to a career."
Â
Preparations for 2024 are already underway with the possibility of increasing the program length from five weeks to seven weeks or more in order to add more professional development workshops.
Â
"The internship was created to maximize the summer months and provide an experiential learning opportunity to help prepare our student-athletes for success," said Nooney.
Â
The internship program is just one of the many opportunities provided to Bronco student-athletes via BroncoLife which aims to provide dynamic and impactful programs to develop and empower student-athletes to be positive influencers in their community and to help them reach their full potential in both their college careers and lives after sports.
