BOISE, Idaho – Beck Roghaar, Boise State Women's Tennis head coach, announced the addition of Errol Smith as the program's new assistant coach.
Â
Smith comes to Boise State after spending the previous two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach for UCLA women's tennis. Over the past two years, Smith helped lead his team to an appearance at the 2022 and 2023 NCAA Championships.Â
Â
"We couldn't be happier to welcome Errol to our staff and Boise State Tennis," Roghaar said. "My goal is always to surround our student-athletes with elite people in every area of their experience as part of our program, and Errol is just that. Errol is a great developer and tactician that brings such great energy and passion to the process. He's going to make a great addition and impact here at Boise State."Â
Â
In the 2022-23 season, Smith's team at UCLA beat two teams ranked in the Top Five and earned a win over No. 6 Duke for a spot in the super-regional round of the NCAA Championships.
Â
Smith also provided on-court guidance for UCLA freshman Fangran Tian as she became the 2023 NCAA singles champion without dropping a set all season.Â
Â
"Not only does he bring an exceptional level of playing experience that will serve our players very well, but his on-court work developing and coaching the 2023 NCAA Singles National Champion this past season at UCLA speaks volumes to the level of coach he is as well," Roghaar said.
Â
The previous season was Smith's first in the coaching ranks and his team went 7-1 in Pac-12 play during the dual-match portion.
Â
"I want to express my excitement and enthusiasm about joining Boise State University, its prestigious athletic program and working with Coach Beck," Smith said. "I've always had a strong passion for coaching and a commitment to making a positive impact on the student-athletes and the broader community. My continued dedication, drive and willingness to contribute to the growth and success of both the athletes and the community are second to none. My goal is to showcase, maximize and implement my coaching philosophy, leadership qualities and previous experiences as an asset to this University and Coach Beck."
Â
Following his career at Loyola Marymount University, Smith embarked on a professional career and has since been a regular on the ITF Tennis Tour. That same year, he advanced through qualifying to reach the singles semifinal round at the Tunisia F33 Futures event. Smith has also logged six quarterfinal-round showings and one semifinal finish in both singles and doubles.
Â
Before coaching, Smith played at LMU where he garnered two West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week accolades and one Double's Team of the Week. In addition, Smith was named the 2015 WCC Freshman of the Year.
