Broncos Head to NAU Lumberjack Classic

Boise State at Lumberjack Classic
- This week Boise State (2-2) travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Lumberjack Classic Sept. 8-9 at Northern Arizona University.
- The tournament field includes the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (5-1) of the Western Athletic Conference, Arizona State (6-0) of the Pac-12 Conference and the hosts, the NAU Lumberjacks (2-4) out of the Big Sky Conference.Â
- The tournament begins Friday with the Broncos facing Stephen F. Austin at 11 a.m. MDT, followed by Arizona State at 6 p.m. The tournament wraps up Saturday afternoon when the Broncos face NAU at 2 p.m.Â

The Broncos
- Boise State is coming off a 0-2 opening weekend at the Asics Invitational at Corvallis, Ore., last weekend, where they fell 3-1 to Oklahoma and 3-0 to Oregon State.Â
- Paige Bartsch and Anabel Kotzakov led the Broncos in Corvallis, with Bartsch recording a combined team-high 30 kills and Kotzakov tallying 19.Â
- The Broncos return four starters from 2022 in Bartsch (Jr., OPP), Annie Kaminski (Sr., MB), Jordan Miller (Jr., OH), Chey Day (Sr., MB).
- Bartsch is a 2023 Preseason All-Mountain West selection and was a 2022 All-MW honoree and the 2021 MW Freshman of the Year, while Kaminski was a 2022 All-MW Honorable Mention and the spring 2021 MW Newcomer of the Year.
- In all, Boise State returns nine student-athletes from the 2022 campaign while adding seven newcomers, three transfers and four freshmen.
- Key newcomers are transfers Noelani Helm (Gr., S, Portland) and Breanna Mitchell (So., L, CSUN).
- The Broncos were picked by the MW coaches to place sixth out of 11 teams in the 2023 league race.Â
The SFA Ladyjacks
- SFA enters the week at 5-1 and plays at North Texas on Wednesday before traveling to Flagstaff. The Ladyjacks are coming off a 3-0 mark at their home tournament last week, where they defeated Cal Poly 3-0, Nicholls 3-0 and Southern Miss 3-2.
- SFA is in its 36th season under head coach Debbie Humphrey, where she is 798-363.
- The Ladyjacks were picked to repeat as WAC champions during the 11-team league race in 2023.Â
The SFA Series
- This is the first meeting between the two schools in volleyball.
The Sun Devils
- Arizona State enters the week undefeated at 6-0 and coming off a 3-0 weekend at the Borderland Invitational at Las Cruces, N.M. The Sun Devils defeated UTEP, San Francisco and New Mexico State all by 3-1 scores.Â
- JJ Van Niel is in his first season as head coach at ASU.
- ASU returns nine letterwinners and six starters from last year's 13-19 squad.
- The Sun Devils were picked to place 10th out of 12 teams in the 2023 Pac-12 race.Â
The Arizona State Series
- This will be the fourth meeting all-time between ASU and Boise State, with the Sun Devils holding a 2-1 advantage in the series.Â
- Arizona State won the last encounter between the two teams 3-0 at Tempe on Aug. 26, 2017.
The Lumberjacks
- NAU brings a 2-4 record into this weekend's tournament. The Lumberjacks are coming off a 0-3 weekend at the Jacksonville (Fla.) Tournament where they fell to Jacksonville 3-0, Florida A&M 3-2 and The Citadel 3-0.
- Ken Murphy is in his 11th season as head coach of NAU where he is 181-109.
- NAU returns seven letterwinners from last year's 5-18 squad.
- The Lumberjacks were picked to place seventh out of 10 teams in the 2023 Big Sky race.Â
The NAU Series
- This will be the 23rd meeting all-time between NAU and Boise State — former Big Sky rivals — with the Broncos leading the all-time series 13-9.Â
- The Lumberjacks won the last meeting between the schools 3-1 at Phoenix (Grand Canyon) on Sept. 18, 2015.
