COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State senior Sam Sippel has been named this week's Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week. This is the first MW Player of the Week accolade of his Boise State career.
Â
This was the second honor of the day for Sippel after being named the Ford Boise State Student-Athlete of the Week earlier on Wednesday for his performance last week.
Â
Sippel helped the Broncos earn a split at last weekend's ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbus, Ohio, where the Blue and Orange defeated Oregon 4-3 before falling to top-ranked Ohio State 4-0.
Â
The native of Germany went 2-1 overall on the weekend, 1-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Â
In the ITA Kickoff's first round versus Oregon, Sippel defeated 66th-ranked Quinn Vandecasteele in straight sets after rallying from 5-1 down in the first set to force it into a tiebreaker where he won 7-6(6), followed by a 6-3 set two victory.
Â
In addition, while teamed up with Jip van Assendelft, he also won at the No. 1 doubles position against the Ducks by a 6-3 score.
Â
This week, the Broncos head to the Midwest to play at 19th-ranked Michigan State on Friday and at Indiana on Sunday.
