BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Former Boise State standouts Marisa Howard and Allie Ostrander both earned podium finishes at the USATF 10K Trail Running Championships Nov. 16. The course, located in the outskirts of Bentonville, was 95% unpaved.

Ostrander, who finished second, is the most decorated student-athlete in Boise State history. She won three consecutive NCAA titles in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, becoming the only Division I female athlete to achieve the feat. Ostrander was inducted into the Boise State Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this month.

In her first trail race, Howard finished third, traversing the course in 44:20. A current assistant coach for Bronco distance runners, Howard most recently represented Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. During her time as a Bronco, she was a three-time Mountain West champion and a two-time NCAA First Team All-American.

Boise's extensive trail network spans more than 200 miles of dirt paths, including the Ridge to Rivers system, providing Ostrander, Howard, and all student-athletes with excellent training options during their time as a Bronco. Just minutes from campus, these trails offer a unique advantage for all runners, combining diverse terrain with accessibility to enhance their training and performance.

QUOTABLES:
  • "I had an incredible time taking my first stab at trail racing," said Marisa Howard. "Even though I lacked some experience on the technical downhills, I still managed to compete well with the top women in the country. Our trail system in Boise is top notch. The accessibility and vastness of our trail system is remarkable and not many communities in the US are fortunate to have this type of resource!"
  • "I loved the event," Allie Ostrander said. "It was such an interesting course that really required my full mental focus the entire time. The race flew by, and it was so much fun! The trail system in Boise is amazing. I think it's a huge asset of the program at Boise State, and something that I look forward to every time I visit Boise!"
  • "I loved seeing two Bronco greats competing at the highest level on the trails." said head coach Pat McCurry. "Our distance runners get access to some of the best trail running in America every day, located just a few minutes from our track.  It is a huge component of our training and the student athlete experience here."
