Broncos' Hot Start Fuels 83-69 Win over Hampton

11/24/2024 11:24:00 AM | Men's Basketball

George Town, Cayman Island — Tyson Degenhart's 25 points powered Boise State to an 83-69 victory over Hampton in the opening round of the Cayman Islands Classic on Sunday at John Gray Gymnasium.

The Broncos (4-1) started strong, opening a 41-21 halftime lead fueled by Degenhart's offensive efficiency and a team defensive effort that held the Pirates (2-4) to 26% shooting in the first half. Boise State led for all but the opening seconds, maintaining a double-digit margin throughout the game.

Hampton cut the deficit to 12 points multiple times in the second half, but Boise State's scoring prevented the Pirates from closing the gap to single digits. The Broncos extended their largest lead to 23 points early in the second half before Hampton's late push.

The Broncos controlled the inside, outrebounding Hampton 40-24, with key contributions from Andrew Meadow, who had a team-high six rebounds to go with his 10 points, and four others who had five boards, including Degenhart (five rebounds).

Boise State also outscored Hampton 44-30 inside the paint.

Alvaro Cardenas orchestrated the offense with eight assists while adding eight points. With the help of the eight points, he reached the 1,000-career point club during the game. The first-year Bronco scored 961 career points in his first three years of his collegiate career at San Jose State and now has 43 points this season with Boise State.

The Broncos had 20 assists on 26 made field goals as eight different players had at least one helper.

Hampton's Noah Farrakhan had a team-high 23 points, but Boise State's defense limited his supporting cast as no other Pirate reached double figures until the closing minutes.

For the game, Boise State shot 54.2% from the field (26-48) while Hampton registered a 41.9% clip (26-62).

With the win, Boise State advances to face the winner of South Dakota State and Duquesne on Monday at 11:30 a.m. MT in the Cayman Islands Classic semifinals.
