Broncos Bested by Aztecs

SAN DIEGO – Boise State women's basketball couldn't overcome a slow start, losing its opening game of the Mountain West season to San Diego State, 74-59, at Viejas Arena on Sunday.
The Aztecs (12-2, 1-0 MW) raced out a 15-point lead in the opening quarter and never looked back. The Broncos (10-4, 0-1 MW) cut the deficit to single digits multiple times throughout the contest, but couldn't close the gap.
San Diego State finished with a 52.7% shooting performance from the floor, and shot over 50% in each of the first three quarters. Boise State converted 35.6% of its field goal attempts in the loss.Â
Tatum Thompson scored the first four points for the Broncos, but the Aztecs raced out to a 19-6 lead to open the contest. Libby Hutton scored back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to nine entering the second frame.
San Diego State grew its lead to 16 midway through the period. Mya Hansen answered by scoring six consecutive Bronco points to cut the deficit to 10, but the Aztecs converted a layup on their final possession to take a 39-27 lead to the locker room.
Hutton once again cut the lead to single digits with a 3-pointer midway through the quarter. However the two teams continued trading baskets, with the Aztecs holding on to a 10-point lead entering the final period.
Hansen converted back-to-back baskets to open the frame, but San Diego State stretched its lead to 15 points midway through the quarter and cruised to the win.

- Mya Hansen scored a season-high 18 points. The junior shot 6-of-11 from the floor and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. The Billings, Mont., native also added three assists.
- Natalie Pasco shot 4-of-6 to finish with 10 points in the loss.
- Libby Hutton and Tatum Thompson each added seven points.
