MY CAUSE MEET: Friday is the Broncos' My Cause Meet, dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness and Boise State Head Coach Tina Bird's grandson, Baker, who was born with congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV). Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, with about 85% of those impacted having no family history of breast cancer. Regular breast self-exams, an annual exam by your doctor and yearly mammograms are important tools in breast cancer detection – especially in early detection, when cancers may be more treatable. cCMV is the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the United States, as about 1 out of 200 babies is born with cCMV. One in five infants born with cCMV present as symptomatic. In 75% of symptomatic infants, the brain is affected and they are more likely to experience microcephaly, large livers and spleens, developmental delays and in extreme cases, death. Infants born asymptomatic are still at risk for developing symptoms later in life, most commonly hearing and vision impairments.
