Broncos Open Season with Successful Weekend in Arizona

BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State beach volleyball team opened the 2024 season finishing 4-2 on its opening weekend. The Broncos went 3-1 at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz., before splitting its matches at the Grand Canyon Tournament.

The Blue and Orange started off their season with a win, taking down Cal State Bakersfield 3-2 after winning all five first sets. In its second match of the day, Boise State found itself trailing Colorado Mesa 2-1. Ava Anderson and Emilia Guerra-Acuña tied the match up with a three-set victory on court three, setting up a thrilling finish from Sharli O'Neil and Elli Wolthuis on court five. After splitting the first two sets, the duo won 15-9 in the final set to clinch the victory for the Broncos.

Boise State started the second day with a sweep of San Francisco, winning all but one match in straight-sets. The final dual of the Cactus Classic against Arizona came down to court three. With the score knotted at two, the Wildcats (4-0) pulled away 21-15, 15-21, 15-13 to clinch the match.

The Broncos ended their weekend at the Grand Canyon Tournament on Sunday. Boise State took down UAB in the opening dual 4-1, with three of its wins occurring in straight sets. In the final dual of the weekend against, No. 14 Grand Canyon won the first two matches to take a 2-0 lead. The Broncos picked up two wins on courts three and five, but couldn't convert on the top court as the Lopes (4-0) claimed the victory.

Notables
- Sierra Land moved into first place in program history with 21 career wins on the top court.
- Land also became the program's record-holder for most career matches donning the Blue and Orange with 97.
- Boise State maintained undefeated all-time records against Cal State Bakersfield (3-0), Colorado Mesa (6-0) and San Francisco (5-0.)
- The dual against UAB was the first matchup between the two teams in program history.

What's Next
The Broncos will head back out on the road for the Pepperdine Classic, March 1-2, in Malibu, Calif. Boise State will take on Pepperdine, Arizona, San Francisco and Vanguard at the two-day event.
