BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's tennis cruised past the Purdue Boilermakers 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise. It was the first victory in five attempts this season versus the Big Ten Conference as the Broncos improved to 8-9 overall.

The Blue and Orange opened with a strong showing in doubles, taking the point 2-0 over the Boilermakers. Boise State earned victories from the tandem of Idriss Haddouch and Jip van Assendelft at No. 2 doubles, followed by a win from John Chin and James Van Herzeele on court three, both by 6-2 scores.

Van Herzeele wasted little time spotting the Broncos a 2-0 lead in the team score with a quick 6-1, 6-0 straight-set victory at the fourth singles position.

After Purdue claimed its lone point of the match, making it Boise State 2-1, the Broncos responded with four consecutive victories to put the match away. Jan Lucca Marquardt clinched the team victory at No. 3 singles by a 7-6(6), 6-3 score.

Quotables

  • "Home sweet home! It feels good to be home!" said head coach Luke Shields. We've been grinding it out on the road for the majority of the spring season. We've played a really tough schedule that has sharpened our games. We had a great week of practice, and there was a carryover to the match. Great team win. Purdue is well-coached, and they have some talented players."
  • "James (Van Herzeele) did a great job of getting off the court first and really valuing every point," said Shields. "Sam (Sippel) played a solid match. While Jan Lucca (Marquardt) got the clinch for us, and John (Chin) and Idriss (Haddouch) kept it rolling, keeping their winning streaks going."

Notable

  • Van Herzeele matched Jett Middleton for the team lead in singles victories with his 15th today and his 10th doubles win.
  • Sippel claimed his 13th singles win of the season.
  • Marquardt won his 11th singles and team-best 16th doubles matches this year.
