Broncos Swept by Aggies in Doubleheader

LOGAN, Utah – Boise State's offense was held in check by Utah State as the Aggies swept a softball doubleheader 2-1 and 9-1 (5), Friday.
Â
In the opener, Hollie Farmer homered to lead off the top of the fifth for the game's first run. Utah State (19-11, 3-2 Mountain West) tied the game and loaded the bases with one out.
Â
Abby Bumcrot fielded a ground ball off the bat of Tatum Silva, but her throw to the plate bounced and Leah McAnally could not come up with it allowing the winning run to score.
Â
Trailing 1-0 in the nightcap, Boise State (20-13, 0-2 MW) tied the game on a bizarre play in the third. With Sophia Knight at first base and one out, McAnally hit what appeared to be a go-ahead home run. However, Knight thought the ball was caught and headed back to first base. McAnally was halfway to second and was called out for passing a preceding runner. Instead of taking a 2-1 lead, the Broncos settled for a 1-1 tie.
Â
The Aggies scored six times in the third and two in the fourth to earn the mercy-rule victory.
Â
"We have been resilient all year and have done a good job dealing with adversity," head coach Justin Shults said. "Tomorrow we need to find a way to take a game in this series."
