Broncos Claim Second Sweep of Opening Weekend, Down VCU 3-0

9/1/2024 1:52:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

TUCSON, Ariz. – Boise State's volleyball team played its best match of the opening weekend in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-20) sweep over the VCU Rams on the final day of the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday.

The Broncos' offensive effort against VCU, from the Atlantic 10 Conference, was balanced. Nine Broncos scored in the victory; three had eight or more kills.

Paige Bartsch led the team with her 12th-consecutive match in double-digit kills – dating back to 2023 – on a team-high 12 against the Rams.

Like Saturday's win over Tennessee State, Boise State trailed only once in the match at 3-2 in the second set. The Broncos hit .292 percent and held VCU to .146. They also had a 7-0 advantage in service aces and 9-4 in blocks.

Annie Kaminski and Kiki Remensperger were both named to the All-Cactus Classic Team for their performances over the weekend.

QUOTABLES

Shawn Garus, Head Coach
  • "We played our best match of the weekend today against a very talented VCU team. We jumped on them early and stayed focused. It was an overall team victory for us."
  • "It was the most complete match for us here in Arizona. We had a high scoring rate with great serving, blocking, and on the attack. We were extremely efficient in all aspects of the match."
  • "I thought Annie (Kaminski) and Layla (Smith) were very good today. They both hit a high percentage and were strong at the net with the block. Layla led us with five blocks, I am very pleased with how she played."
  • "Going 2-1 with two sweeps was a good way to start the season. We still have a lot to work on before next week's matches in Montana, but overall, I am very pleased with our performance this weekend and can't wait to get back in the gym."

WHAT'S NEXT

Next week, Boise State will travel to Missoula, Mont., for the Ellesyn Invitational, where the Broncos will face Southern Miss, Utah Valley, and Montana.
