Dreves had a season-high 17 kills
BOISE, Idaho – Sydney Dreves had a career-high 17 kills to lead four Broncos in double-figures as Boise State held off a San Jose State comeback attempt and beat the Spartans in five sets (25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 15-9) on Thursday in Bronco Gym.Â
The Broncos (13-5, 5-2 Mountain West) picked up their fifth straight home win thanks to Dreves and her team-high four kills in the fifth set. The freshman outside hitter had three kills among Boise State's final four points, including match point.
Arianna Bilby (14 kills), Eliza Sharp (13) and Layla Smith (10) joined Dreves with double-digit kills in the Broncos' fifth conference victory of the year.
Boise State has now won six of its last eight matches.
Lilli Etter had a double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs. Elle Cotton, meanwhile, had 28 assists and eight digs.
Boise State was efficient on both sides of the net in the first, hitting .444 as a team and limiting San Jose State (8-10, 3-4 Mountain West) to a .138 attack percentage. Bilby had six kills on nine swings and was among five Broncos who had multiple kills in the set.
Dreves led the Broncos in their 25-21 win in the second set. She had five kills and two blocks while the Broncos had five total blocks as a team.
Despite the Broncos taking the 2-0 lead, San Jose State started to stage its come-from-behind attempt with a back-and-forth third set. The middle stanza featured 13 ties and six lead changes, but the Spartans - thanks to seven kills from Lolo Fonua and six from Morgan Graves - hit .447 in the third to make the match 2-1.
In the fourth set, neither side led by more than three points early on and Boise State used an attack error by the Spartans immediately after the media timeout to pull within one, 15-14. But San Jose State leveraged a 5-0 run that saw the Broncos burn both of their timeouts to open up a 20-14 advantage. A tandem block by Kailyn Jager and Sharp later made it 22-17 San Jose State and forced the Spartans to call a timeout, but the visitors staved off any sort of Boise State rally to take the match to five sets.
After the fifth opened up to a 4-4 score, the Broncos began to pull away as they went on a 9-1 run. A block by Smith initiated the burst while two kills apiece from Dreves and Sharp, as well as an ace by Bilby, put the Broncos in position to seal the win.
The victory improved Boise State to 6-2 at home this season.
