BOISE, Idaho – A balanced attack carried Boise State to a 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 victory over Fresno State in Mountain West women's volleyball, Thursday at Bronco Gym.
The Broncos (11-3, 3-0 MW) were led by Kailyn Jager's 12 kills. Layla Smith added nine kills, hit .500 and added four blocks.
Arianna Bilby chipped in eight kills and Sydney Dreves and Eliza Sharp contributed six each. The Broncos outhit the Bulldogs (4-10, 0-3) .289 to .215.
In the first set, Boise State raced out to a 5-1 advantage before Fresno State rallied to lead 12-11. The Broncos took the lead for good at 14-13 and closed the set on a 6-1 run capped by a kill from Jager.
The Broncos trailed by four on multiple occasions in the second set before tying the score at 15 on three Bulldog errors and an ace by Elle Cotton. Boise State grabbed an 18-17 lead courtesy of a Fresno State error and added kills by Jazmine Smith and Layla Smith to go up by three. Kills by Jager and Layla Smith and three more Bulldog errors put the Broncos up 2-0.
The teams traded points early in set three before the Broncos seized control with a 5-1 spurt to go on top 11-6. The Bulldogs closed within 17-16, but the Broncos slammed the door with a block and kills from Layla Smith and Bilby.
